Watch Every Yankees Game! (Unless Of Course You Can't)

I got an email from the Yankees yesterday, informing me that I could "Watch every Yankees game on MLB.tv Premium":

You don't say!

They use lots of fonts and fades and flashy graphics, but tucked away in the fine print just underneath the bright green buttons where you can buy the service, it says "Blackout and other Restrictions Apply".

Hey Yankees, guess where probably 90% of the people on this email list live? In your fucking broadcast territory! It's not that the headline is misleading, it's the exact opposite of the truth for the vast majority of the recipients of this blast. Is that not a little disingenuous?

The people out of the market have probably looked into how they would be able to watch the games, don't you think? I'm not breaking new ground here, nor is this going to make a difference, but they should just stream the commercials through the feeds and dump the ridiculous blackout restrictions. It's bullshit. They have customers who are willing to pay for the service and I'm sure any of those cable networks would be open to having their viewing audiences increased if the viewers were shown the ads. Work it out. I blame Bud Selig.

And in the interest of full disclosure, they should probably be more up front with what the blackout restrictions entail. The price is high enough where the customer deserves to be made aware that if they are in their home market, they are going to be dropping $110 for everyone else's games and their team's radio feed.

  1. Yup, I live in Washington have the subscription and was blackedout for the Baltimore series. Normally not a big deal, and it wasn't for the night game where I could watch on TV, but with two day games when I'm trying to watch from my office it was annoying to only get radio feed.

  2. Laura - I had te same problem for the two day games. Don't get me wrong, I just LOVE John and Suzyn, but it would be nice to be able to actually see some of the action and get some screen grabs for those readers who can't.

  3. Not to be an asshole, oh wait I am, but I live in North FUCKING Carolina and I get blacked out of Orioles games?! I'm 6hrs from Baltimore but somehow I'm in their home market? Really?!

I know it's only 18 games a year (assuming I have the time to watch them all), which only works out 10% of the games, but I feel like I should get a discount because it isn't my fault that I can't watch those games. It's not like I live in College Park and don't pay for cable. I emailed MLB.com about it last year, basically they told me to pound sand....

  4. Oh, and I reupped for it again this year, because what am I going to do, not watch Yankees games? MLB has us Northeast ex-pats by the short ones.

  5. Yeah, that's the funny part AA. This is like my 3rd post bitching about it, but you don't see me unsubscribing...

  6. You should call your cable company and see if you can get YES on your cable package.

  7. Can anyone else out there attest to how the YES-HD feed looks through MLB.TV? I'm also in the DC area and am thinking of signing up for this service to catch this weekend's games. I saw parts of the games vs. the Cubs at the new stadium through their free trial, which looked good. But the MLB.TV support forum seems to be ablaze with people having problems.

  8. Will- Unless you need/want to be able to watch the games at work I would go with the Extra Innings TV package. Although not all the games will be in HD (and the ones that they say are have yet to be) it still seems like a better bet. I tried mlb.tv the first year I moved to Philly and have bought the TV package since.

  9. Give HotSpot Shield a try. It's a free ad-supported download and VPN connection specifically to let people get around "censorship" (and I'll count the blackout restrictions in that).

    DO NOT GET!!!
I would rather read the scores in my local newspaper the next day than deal with MLB.TV again!!!
